Your first visit to Back In Motion Family & Sports Chiropractic establishes a vital foundation for our relationship with you. During the first visit, we make sure to obtain important background information, like your medical history, and give you time to get to know your doctor. To understand what to expect for your first visit to our practice, please read through this page.
Our mission at Back In Motion Family & Sports Chiropractic is to provide high-quality health care to people of all ages. We strive to not only correct a person’s health problems, but to educate and enlighten people so that they do not encounter similar problems in the future.
Upon entering our office, our receptionist will request that you complete our patient forms. This paperwork provides us with your health history and information on your condition. Patient forms can be e-mailed, mailed, or faxed to you for your convenience. You can save some time at your first visit by completing the new patient forms in advance of your appointment.
Next, you will have a consultation with Dr. Shawn Burns to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, and potential treatment options. This initial visit is designed for Dr. Burns to learn more about you, your condition, and expectations to determine how chiropractic care can meet your goals.
After your consultation, Dr. Burns will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes and flexibility. Other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical tests will be performed as well. However, nothing will be done in our office without your consent.
Depending on your specific condition, we may order X-rays as well. X-rays help us develop the most effective treatment plan for you, and alert us of any serious spinal conditions. Most people are amazed once they see their X-rays up close. In some cases, they can even identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.
We primarily utilize the services of the St.Lawrence Radiology Imaging Services located in the Canton Potsdam Hospital location. The team of medical radiologists at CPH will review whatever imaging studies are ordered by Dr. Burns and issue a report. Dr. Burns will review the images as well and discuss your imaging results with you.
Report of Findings
Once the information is collected and examinations are performed, Dr. Burns will give you a detailed report of all findings and answer any questions including:
- How can you help me?
- How often do I need to come in?
- What will my treatment cost?
After reviewing your health history, goals, and examining your spine and imaging, Dr. Burns will discuss recommendations and notify you if your condition requires care with other providers. Dr. Burns will provide the best treatment and wellness program for your needs.
At the conclusion of this initial appointment, you can choose to experience your first treatment. This will usually include spinal adjustments and physiotherapeutics such as moist heat, ice, electrical muscle stimulation, trigger point therapy and specialized stretching techniques. Treatment is interactive, so you can express concerns about the different treatments at any time.
For most musculoskeletal conditions the subsequent visits will include instructions on how to perform a regimen of stretching and exercises at home that are pertinent to your condition(s). These instructional visits are placed strategically in your care plan for safety and tolerance. Dr. Burns wants his patients to get well as fast as possible, but everyone’s pace or tolerance is not the same so we will accommodate your needs as best we can.
Prior to leaving, the doctor may suggest a wellness program to incorporate outside of treatment. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include: ice or heat application instructions, certain activities or positions to avoid, and at home exercises and/or stretches. If you desire, our wellness team will work with you also to create healthy habits and routines for your lifestyle. Every person is unique, therefore everyone requires a customized wellness plan. The purpose of our wellness program is for you to achieve good spinal alignment, have a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive mental state.
